To Implement an Intelligent Navigation System for a Skateboard

Final Year Project

Final Year Project: Projects

Market

Competition

The Skateboard market is immense with several types of skateboards for different purposes such as off-road, cruising and performance tricks.  All these have alternative markets which are electric skateboards so this market is brand new and less than three years old.  Also electric skateboards usually have the same features and capabilities such as battery powered and remote controlled. However, none of these skateboards have an intelligent navigation system implemented.

Android App

MIT App Inventor 2

The idea behind this is to demonstrate the communications between the Android smartphone and the raspberry pi via Bluetooth. An app needs to be created with a simple interface which allows the user to select the left or right LED and displayed any four digit numbers on the seven-segment display. After successfully making this work, Google maps will be integrated into the app allowing the system to work by itself, by only selecting the destination.

Design

Concept Design 2

Solidworks is used to design the concept designs of the finished product. In the first concept design, the plan was to use an LCD but after further research was conducted it changed to seven-segment display. The screen interface is located at the nose of the longboard; the nose has a slope which is familiar with longboards for better visibility for the user. The display will be protected with a 3mm tempered glass, which is scratch and shatters resistant. The LEDs will come with frosted effect acrylic which will increase the visibility of the LED in daylight.
